Dragon Lace Pullover

Years ago, when I first came across the “Leaning Ladder” stitch pattern in Barbara Walker’s “A Fourth Treasury of Knitting Patterns,” I thought that the undulating lace column looked like the body of a dragon. So in early 2012, the Chinese Year of the Dragon, I decided to create a design incorporating a lace dragon, adding lace limbs, claws, head and tail to the “Leaning Ladder” pattern. I kept the rest of this hip-length pullover simple and classic, with set-in ¾-length sleeves, moderate waist shaping, V-neckline, I-cord trim at neck and cuffs, and turned hem.

Difficulty: Intermediate: Skills include working provisional cast on, working in the round, keeping track of row counts, decreasing and increasing, reading a lace chart, short row shaping, and working attached I-cord.

Materials: Yarn DK or sport weight yarn, 975 (1105, 1230, 1365, 1500, 1635, 1755) yd/895 (1015, 1130, 1255, 1370, 1500, 1610) m. Shown in Frog Tree Pima Silk, 85% pima cotton, 15% silk, 155 yd (142 m)/1 ¾ oz (50 g) skein, #800, 7 (8, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12) skeins.

Needles US size 4/3.50 mm circular (cir), 24-47” depending on selected garment size, for hem facing. US size 5/3.75 mm cir, 24-47” depending on selected garment size, for body. US size 5/3.75 mm set of double-pointed (dpn), for sleeves. Larger garment sizes may use 16” US size 5/3.75 mm cir for upper sleeves. Adjust needle sizes if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions 4 stitch markers; 4 stitch holders or waste yarn; tapestry needle.

Gauge: 24 sts/32 rnds to 4”/10 cm in stockinette stitch on US size 5/3.75 mm needles. Measure gauge on blocked swatch.

Notes: This pullover is worked in the round from the bottom up to the armholes. The Dragon Lace motif is given in chart form only.
